Kayaking at the La Jolla Caves

Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011 we went kayaking in La Jolla. We got a good Groupon deal on rentals at Hike, Bike, Kayak. There were 16 boys and 6 adults (11 tandum kayaks).  The weather was perfect: a little overcast then the sun came out after we got started.  The surf was small so it was easier to get the kayaks out.  Some of the highlights:
  • Seals on the rocks
  • Racing to the buoy (all 11 kayaks)
  • Dolphins (swimming all around us)
  • Leopard Shark and Sting Ray feeding area.  We watched from our kayaks and some of the brave got into the water.
  • Kayak surfing (it was mostly flipping kayaks over).
This is definitely an activity we'll be doing again!

Emotion Charades - Combined Activity

Tonight we played "Emotion Charades" for our Mutual combined activity.  We split into groups of 4-6, and first had to identify the emotions shown on faces in several photographs.  Then, a set of cards (each with a different emotion listed) was given and each person in the group had to show the emotions on card.  Finally, the groups photographed the best emotion faces, all the photos were collected and everyone watched the slide show.  Here are some of the best faces:

Varsity Scout Triathlon

This morning was the Varsity Scout Triathlon at Fiesta Island. We had great representation from the ward with 14 participants: 3 youth and 2 adult individual racers and 3 relay teams.

It started with a brisk swim in the ocean of about 200 yards. This was followed by an 8 mile bike ride (The individual participants had to first wash the beach sand off their feet and put socks and shoes on). Next was a two mile run.

Everyone finished and we overcame some minor equipment challenges. Times are below the photo.

Good times & good lessons

Sins & transgressions weigh you down & tie you up. Shed those bounds with continual repentance and be free and happy. Thanks Brother Vargas for a great lesson Sunday.

Survival Skills - 3 Effective Small Animal Traps

Since so many of you showed considerable interest in Bro. Fullerton's lesson on snaring rabbits I thought I would post some videos I found showcases not only snares but two other effective traps for catching small animals in a survival situation. Enjoy!

Rain, Rain Go Away...

Well everyone, its an absolute monsoon outside right now and frankly I don't think things are looking very good for this weekend's camp out.  Being that the rain tonight was so heavy I'm worried about the road being washed out.  Plus it's supposed to rain both Friday and Saturday while we're there.  Let's still plan on gear inspections on Thursday night and we'll make a decision at that point. If it's sunny the rest of the week and it no longer looks like it's going to rain next weekend we'll still go.  For now I'm just not sure, I'm not very confident that it's going to work out.

If we are not able to go this weekend we will postponed the camp out for two weeks.  Probably April 8th & 9th.  If enough of you are interested we may be able to stay longer since that week you'll be out of school for spring break. Maybe we can stay 2 nights or at least go up earlier in the day on Friday.

Check back for updates throughout the week. Eddie and I may try to drive up to the campsite on Wednesday or Thursday to check out the road. We'll let you know what we find.

LASHINGS REFRESHER

Some of our lashings on Thursday night were lacking a bit which led to some less than sturdy shelters. I thought you might enjoy a video refresher so here are a few key lashings and knots you should know well.

Diagonal Lashing

Round Lashing

Building a debris shelter

Happy lashing.

Survival Shelter Practice

Congratulation to all the youth for making such vast improvements in their survival shelter building tonight.  I think we can all agree that your skills dramatically improved with the second attempt. You will all be glad you had this practice when we're up on the mountain next weekend. It's never fun to have your shelter fall apart in the wee hours and have to get up and try to fix it in the cold rather than stay cozy in your warm sleeping bag.

Remember that next Thursday we will holding gear inspections at the church so all of you need to come prepared as if you were leaving on the camp out that night.  Patrol leaders will conduct gear inspections and ensure everyone is prepared.

Be sure to tell the other boys how much fun we had tonight and they need to make sure to be at next thursdays gear inspection. Thanks and great job tonight.

Driving a Lexus

For Mutual, the Priest's Quorum went to the Escondido Lexus dealership as guests of Randy Knight.  They learned a little about buying a car, went for a test drive in an IC 250.  We cannot confirm nor deny that the boys got to test drive the car in the parking lot at the Stake Center.  After the test drive, the boys were treated to treats at the dealership cafe.  Quote of the evening "Why don't the Priests do stuff like this more often?"

Thursday Night Toastmaster - February 17th, 2011

Thursday night activity was great. Thanks to Brother Corbet & Carter for teaching us about Toastmasters.  (Thanks also to Kelley Fullerton our scoutmaster for working with the scouts on merit badges.) Each of us now has a better idea of our impromptu public speaking strengths & weaknesses plus it was a lot of fun. The root beer floats after were tasty too from what I gather.

For those who don't know what Toastmasters is here is a brief explanation.  Essentially a topic is given, which in this case was video games and the role of technology in schools and several questions are issued to the group one at a time.  After each question is issued one person is chosen to stand up in front of the group and respond to the question by giving a brief one minute response as best they can.  Some of the questioned asked were -

Topic - Technological advances in schools and how they have or should change the way we teach.
Example Question - If you could get rid of one subject/class in school what would it be and what other subject would you replace it with.

Jordan Jocelyn's reply was excellent, though I don't have it word for word. He said that he had been required to take a music appreciation class and that it was a huge waste of time. He wasn't interested in the topic at all and felt he gained absolutely nothing from it. Compared that to a career class where he learned about different careers to consider and what he would need to do to enter each career path.  He explained that this class was very useful and expose him to many new careers he hadn't thought about before and helped him get a better idea what he wants to be.

Great job Jordan and everyone for your excellent "toasts."

Stake Camp Out & Shooting Day - February 11th -12th, 2011

I'm happy to report that we had a windy but wonderful camp-out this weekend with teachers from around the stake.  After grabbing some grub at Mickey - D's where Jake gobbled down an impressive FOUR McChicken sandwiches. After filling up on processed foods we drove to Palomar mountain arriving just before dark and were met with a heavily rutted and washed out jeep trail leading to our campsite.  Jake and Leo both road with me (Bro Bergen) and comfirmed several times that the road was "bumpy" but despite some tight corners, deep washes and a spin out or two we found our way.  For bragging sake I told the boys I refused to put it in four-wheel drive but nearly needed to in a couple spots. When we arrived, most of other youth & leaders from the stake were there all set up and had a sizable fire burning.  The campsite was atop a hill in a large grassy open patch that would have fit many football fields. It was surrounded by large trees but we camped with the rest of the group in the center of the open field.  We wouldn't realize how beautiful the area was until morning when the surrounding trees, meadows and peaks appeared.  The youth enjoyed a big game of capture the flag (glowsticks) despite the gusty winds and very cool temperatures.  Many of the leaders where happy to see the youth go play as it left more room around the fire to keep warm. Some suggested that they may have planned it that way. Afterwards, everyone gathered around the fire to hear a poem by a Brother from the stake who's name I can't recall. In a surprisingly authentic Irish accent and very eloquently he recited the "The Cremation of Sam McGee." It was so awesome I have included a link below to the same poem read by Johnny Cash on Youtube.  However it doesn't hold a candle to hearing the irish version while standing around a crackling campfire. Afterwards one of the youth shared a scripture and short testimony before the group began heading to bed.

Jake, Leo and Jesse got a first hand lesson from Professor Chili Wind about being prepared.  They had the opportunity to use their collective resourcefulness to fashion a make shift 3 man sleeping apparatus to buffer the cold night's wind.  What they came up with can best be described as a rain-fly quesadilla where the boys were the cheese.  They layed their sleeping bags out across a tarp and staked a tent rain fly tight over top of them and formed a wind break with their bags above their heads. They stayed warm primarily by eating potato chips throughout the night. At one point they got annoyed enough at the rain-fly flapping their faces that they resorted to wandering around camp in the wee hours chasing what they told Jake were ghosts.  Thank heavens Jesse had his airsoft gun to protect the motley crew. The wind and the resident blood hound of Andy's howled throughout the night.

After breakfast there was an impromptu ultimate football game where Bro. Vargas' truck became the eligible receiver for a mid game punt return. It successfully received the ball but didn't gain any yardage, it had to leave the game early due to injuries incurred during the kick return. Next, all the boys were given a thorough safety course by two NRA Range masters on firearms safety before breaking into two group of 8 to take turns at shooting skeet.  One group completed a small service project of repairing the road while the others shot skeet.  The boys had a lot of fun shooting both 20 and 12 gauge single-shot shotguns and each of them successfully hit multiple skeet with Jesse being the most experience and subsequently having the most hits. It was Jake and Leo's first time working with a shotgun and both did very well, each hitting several clay pigeons and thoroughly enjoying the adventure.  While shooting someone noticed a small herd of 4 whitetail deer in the distance which Leo and I enjoyed watching with the binoculars as they grazed across a beautiful lush green meadow in the distance.  At the conclusion of the shooting we broke camp and much of the stake returned home but we hadn't had quite enough fun yet so with permission we hung around for another hours or so to finish getting our shooting fix.  Leo, Jake, Jesse and his dad Mark were in for a real treat as they got to shoot a variety of really "cool" guns.

I polled the boys afterwards and here are a few of their favorite guns to shoot -
AR-15, M14 Socom 16, Mini 30, GSG 5, .357 Magnum and the big sniper rifle Remington model 700 in 300 Win Mag.

My personal highlight was watching each of the boys and Brother Dimmitt set up behind the 300 Win Mag and nail a boulder each with their first shot at 585 yards!!!  For those who don't know, that is a ridiculously long shot especially on you first try with a large caliber rifle like that.  It's something that they won't soon forget and that each of them can brag about.

It was a wonderful trip and hopefully we can get out to both camp and shoot again very soon.  Thanks to everyone that made the trip possible. Special thanks to Andy to letting us use the land, Brother Vargas and Brother Dimmitt everything and to my wife, Sister Bergen for flying solo on her day off and letting me go do what I love. Thanks to the boys for making young mens and scouting a priority among their busy schedules.  It was a blast...literally.
